Piumi Madhuwanthi, Sundar Sapkota, Rajan GhimireNMSU Clovis (2026)

C and N mineralization following organic amendment additions varied at different soil moisture levels. While biochar and compost can increase GHG emissions, optimizing water management can help reduce GHG emissions.

Piumi Madhuwanthi, Rajan Ghimire, Sundar Sapkota, Shannon Norris-Parish, April UleryNMSU Clovis (2026)

Biochar application reduced cumulative N2O–N and CH4–C emissions by 52% and 16%, respectively. Biochar-treated soil had the lowest cumulative N2O–N and CH4–C emissions, reducing net global warming potential (GWP) by 43% and 30%, respectively, compared to compost-treated soil and control

Timing of a single urea application (224 kg N/ha) strongly changed gas losses: fertilizer-derived N2O was under 0.05% of applied N across all six application dates — far below the IPCC 1% default — with fertilizer raising N2O rates above unfertilized soil only in early fall and early summer. The biggest combined N2O + ammonia losses came in cool, wet early-spring soils (>60% water-filled pore space), so matching application date to soil temperature and moisture can cut nitrogen losses.
